Cramer: First Half Recap

Alright, I haven't exactly been providing you with up to date analysis of the workings of the NBA so far this season, but consider this post an opportunity to make up for my shortcomings. There have been many intriguing stories in the NBA this season, both disappointing and exciting, so let's delve into them and break down what's been going on around the L so far.

3 Biggest Surprises

1. Oklahoma City Thunder- Everyone had this team as a potentially great team in the future, but you'd have a difficult time finding anyone who predicted they'd be 30-21 at the all-star break, and almost a sure thing to make the playoffs (cherry on top: in the Western conference). Kevin Durant has been the second best player in the league, and his supporting cast hasn't been too shabby either. They have a PG duo in Russell Westbrook, and Eric Maynor, that could wreak havoc in the NBA for years to come. They're still a young team, and thus have struggled against the big dogs (0-3 vs. LA, 0-2 vs. Cle, 0-1 vs. Boston, and 1-1 vs. Orlando), but I don't think any of those teams can say they got all their victories easily (the Cavs certainly didn't, needing a heroic block by LeBron to seal a victory IN CLEVELAND). Nobody wants to pay this group in the playoffs, and for good reason. They'll be a tough out in the first round, but that's likely where their dream season will end... for this year.

2. The Cavs, without Mo Williams- Remember when Mo Williams was declared unable to play against the Lakers a few weeks ago... if not read this. Since then, the Cavs have continued to win... and only win. Without Mo, the Cavs are an impressive 11-0 and have extended their lead from 3 1/2 games to 7. This isn't to say that the Cavs are a championship contender without their second leading scorer, but the victories they have racked up without him must give coach Brown a lot of confidence in other guys to step up if Mo is off again in the playoffs.

3. Tie- Charlotte Bobcats and Portland Trailblazers- tough call here for #3. The Bobcats are firmly implanted in the playoff picture in the East for the first time in the franchise's history. On the other hand, they have the talent, and now had a coach to put it all together in Larry Brown, so it's hard to say it's terribly surprising how successful they've been (except maybe for their dominance over Cleveland). Over on the other coast, Portland has been very impressive. Not surprising right? They are supposed to be that young, talented team to challenge for the Western crown. Wrong. They've had an immense amount of injuries, don't have a true center on their roster anymore, and have been missing the services of Brandon Roy for quite some time... and they're still 2 games in the playoffs, and only 2 1/2 games out of 4th place (3 games out of 3rd). Both teams have been nice stories for the NBA this season (especially considering the financial situation Charlotte is facing).
