I was going to do by latest installment of my NBA Rankings today, but unfortunately something a bit more important popped up: Mo Williams, the Cavs 2nd best player, will be out at least a month.
The impact of this injury could be catastrophic for the Cavs, and a boon for teams around the league. Since Mo arrived in Cleveland, the Cavs have raised themselves from a tier 2 or 3 team, to the top team in the league (record-wise). He has added a dimension that the Cavs have been lacking ever since LeBron's fateful arrival into Cleveland.
Mark the date: January 21st. The Cavs currently hold a 3 and a half game lead over the Celtics for first place in the Eastern Conference. Unless the Cavs pull off a trade to acquire another gunner soon, they could find themselves in the 2, 3, or even 4 spot come playoff time.
And let's be honest, the injury could be much more serious than the initial articles are indicating. They all have some combination of the words "surgery" and "needed" (usually with the word "not" somewhere in there), and that is a scary thought. Surgery could keep Mo out for the rest of the season and playoffs, and could have a humongous impact on the free agent season of 2010.
Many have speculated that LeBron would bounce from Cleveland in the event that they don't at least reach the Finals, and without Mo Gotti in the line-up, that ain't gonna happen. So NBA fans keep your ears and eyes open, because this injury could mean LeBron will be playing in a different uniform come next season.
