Throughout my day at work on Monday I received several updates involving bad news about top wideouts in the league. This injury bug is really spreading.
First Brandon Marshall, then Bowe, then Bryant, and finally Smith. Mondays usually are a sore day for wide receivers in the NFL.
Brandon Marshall: Mr. Marshall is obviously Denver's most talented wideout, but his actions in the offseason and inability to practice has him with the second team on the depth chart. Royal, Gaffney, and Stokley sit ahead of him. Head coach Josh McDaniels is apparently trying to send a message to the troubled wideout to get his act together.
Dewayne Bowe: Chiefs beat writer Adam Teicher has reported that this sleeper wideout is currently buried in the depth chart at Chiefs camp. It is being said that Bowe will most likely start Week 1, but new coach Todd Haley feels like Bowe is not disciplined enough in terms of their conditioning and team work outs. Teicher stated that Haley is "willing to make an example to get his point across. Until he figures that out, Bowe will be on the bench." This is EXACTLY the discipline that Kansas City needs. Way to go Haley.
Antonio Bryant: Ok, so Bryant will be out 3-4 weeks but it isn't because of an attitude problem. Bucs head coach Raheem Morris stated on Monday that he had a torn meniscus in his knee. Expect the knee to be scoped, but not 100% by Week 1. This is a big downer for their offense when it comes to the passing game because Morris needs Bryant to be clicking with every quarterback. Bryant relies on his vertical nature to make plays, so this could lead to lingering troubles all season.
Steve Smith: Panthers' wideout Steve Smith will miss at least two weeks with a strained shoulder. This was reported by his agent, the most optimistic people in the biz, so when asking head coach John Fox we found that "Smith is in a lot of pain, so something's off-kilter." Hmm that doesn't sound so optimistic to me. According to the Panthers, he will be ready for Week 1, but I don't buy it. If you have other options at wide receiver in your fantasy drafts, your best bet is to go with them.
